When CFA attends a fire or other incident (e.g. road rescue) a report is prepared on the characteristics of the incident and entered into FIRS. Data available in FIRS include type of incident (e.g. bushfire/grassfire, road rescue, residential fires), call characteristics, area characteristics, rescue information, measures for hazardous materials (if applicable), ignition sources, fire fighting (e.g how the fire was extinguished) and structure characteristics. By collecting information on fire and incidents FIRS assists with better understanding of the prevalence of each incident and contributing factors to incidents. Data are collected on an ongoing basis and have been captured since 1994.
